9. Sit quietly in meditation, and you will perceive *oth the true character and the distracting thoughts.
夜深人静独坐观心①，始觉妄穷②而真③独露，每于此中得大机趣④；既觉真现而妄难逃，又于此中得大惭忸。
注 释
① 观心，观察自己的心性，即反省自悟。**主张的修为之法。
② 妄穷：妄，非分或越轨的念头；穷，穷尽，消失。
③ 真：本性中真实自然的东西。亦作本真。
④ 大机趣：自然的乐趣。
今文解译
夜深人静，独坐观心，一开始总会感觉到心里的非分之想都消失了，而本性中真实自然的东西流露出来了；每当于此，心中就深受鼓舞，仿佛悟得了人生的真谛。可是，继而发现自己并未因为本真的流露而摒弃那些非分之想时，心中又不免十分惭愧。
English Translation
When you sit alone introspecting in the quiet of late night, you will first, from the *ottom of your heart, perceive the disappearance of the distracting thoughts and then the appearance of the true character. Every time at this moment you will *e rejoiced to find that you h**e comprehended the real meaning of life. *ut when you are aware that the true character can not take the place of the distracting thoughts, you will feel quite ashamed of yourself.
